Calatayud Wine

Varieties

In the range of grapes that thrive in our territory, Red Garnacha is the most predominant and characteristic. It lives along with other red varieties such as Tempranillo, Syrah, Mazuela, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bobal and Monastrell. They make up 92% of our land area.

The remaining 8% is occupied by our white grapes. Among them, the varieties Viura, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc stand out.

Red Garnacha

For the PDO Calatayud, the Red Garnacha is much more than a grape variety. It is our heritage and the tale of our history. t has been adapted to our territory and our vine growers have adapted to it.

With plantations that in many cases are over 45 years old, the ones called “Old Vines”, and areas of vineyards that are proud of being the highest of Aragon, Garnacha occupies a surfaces area of 1,730 hectares, representing 54% of the total land area of the PDO Calatayud.

It is a rugged variety, perfect for our soils, with a long cycle. It needs much sun and the aid of our vine growers, with the trimming technique (or “desnietado”) certain shoots are suppressed so that all the nutrients go to flower.

Our Wines

The orographic diversity and climate of our valleys, foothills and peaks facilitate the production of a very wide range of wines, among which the red wine produced with the red garnacha variety stands out.

The modern technologies have increased production possibilities and the perfecting of their qualities, resulting in a new generation of young reds, rosés and whites that respond to the current market demands with the particular seal of the PDO Calatayud.

Our way of working is reflected in the strict rules followed in the wineries, included in these Specifications.
